Teachable Moment: Legos

This morning I am getting food packed and kids dressed to visit ... LegoLand

I do not know who is more excited- Adrian and I or the kids. :)

Legos have been an essential toy in the Traurig house for years. With my kids having older boy cousins they did not want anything to do with those duplo blocks or larger legos. Aaron  has been playing with the tiny legos since he was in diapers. (Supervised play of course- we know the risks of choking.) But actually, He was never interested in putting them in his mouth. He always wanted to build.

I am reminded of their love for legos this morning. Madi woke up and the first thing she went for were the legos.

Here is where our teachable moment comes in.

Legos: (Great for Elementary age kids) teaching children about having purpose and being a part of God's church

The Parable of the Legos:

  • Look at the legos.
  • How many different shapes and colors are there? (Have fun counting them and finding new ones.)
  • What if you only had one lego to play with? Would that be fun? no. Why not?
  • Did you know that you and I are a lot like these legos?
  • God made us each different- like the legos.
  • We all can do different things. God made us that way. (Point out some talents your child possesses.)
  • But just like with the legos, God didn't make us to be by ourselves.
No one ever says that they are going to play with lego... they always want to play with legos
  • We can be used more when we are connected to other Christians. Just like a lego is made to be connected to other legos. (Piece two legos together.)
  • When we do this we are being God's church. As His church, we connect with other people who love Jesus; then he can use us to be a part of something much greater than we can imagine. And it is fun. :)
This is what we were created for.
  • Remember: God made you just the way you are on purpose. He wants to use you to build something cooler than anything you could ever create from legos. If we trust Him and put our little lives in His hands (show a tiny lego in your hand) than God will use us to build and be a part of something amazing. And when we connect with God and His people like this, He promises to fill our lives with more fun than we can ever experience by ourselves.
